Herminia Martinez

My name is Herminia Martinez, and I am incredibly grateful to have been selected as a recipient of the Billi Odegaard Scholarship. Growing up as the oldest and only daughter in an immigrant family, I learned the importance of hard work, perseverance, and compassion. My mother has been one of my greatest role models, teaching me through her actions the importance of helping others and treating everyone with kindness, love, and compassion. Her example has played a significant role in shaping who I am today and has inspired my passion for caring for others. I believe that helping others is part of my purpose in life, and nursing gives me the opportunity to fulfill that purpose.

My passion for nursing grew stronger during my service in the Oregon National Guard, where I had the opportunity to support local hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic. During this experience, I witnessed firsthand the dedication, compassion, and hard work nurses put into caring for their patients. I also noticed the limited representation of Spanish-speaking nurses, which further motivated me to pursue this career. Having personally witnessed the challenges my parents and family have faced while navigating the healthcare system, I understand how overwhelming it can be when patients encounter language, cultural, or systemic barriers. My experience working alongside a care management team in a pediatric office further strengthened my understanding of the importance of patient advocacy and access to care.

I later earned my Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) license through Clackamas Community College and had the opportunity to work with older adults, where I discovered a special love for geriatric care. One of the most rewarding parts of this experience has been building relationships with residents and their families, listening to their stories, and learning about the lives they have lived. These experiences have reminded me that nursing is not just about providing medical care, but also about treating every person with dignity, compassion, and understanding. As a future nurse, my goal is to provide compassionate, culturally sensitive care and advocate for patients who face language, cultural, or systemic barriers to healthcare, ensuring they feel heard, valued, and supported.

My family has been my greatest source of love, encouragement, and support throughout this journey, and I would not be where I am today without them. Along with my family's constant support, the Billi Odegaard Scholarship has eased the financial burden of my education and brought me closer to achieving my dream. I feel incredibly blessed to have these opportunities and am deeply thankful to my family and the generosity behind this scholarship for believing in my future. I hope to honor this support by becoming a nurse who makes a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
